The Sinking City (Xbox One/SX)

A rich theme and atmospheric world shine through forgettable gameplay.

But no matter how fond your affection for H.P. Lovecraft and the idea of a wide-eyed, slow-burn literary adventure, the poor design, cliched writing, and lumbering pace make this far more tedious than delightful, let alone unsettling or terrifying.

Still, the game has its charms, and I’ve really enjoyed roaming the streets of Oakmont, meeting its oddball locals, and shooting (or fleeing) its oddest. We’re still waiting for a truly great Cthulhu game, but until it arrives this certainly helps pass the time.

While occasionally frustrating, The Sinking City's compelling stories, exciting environments, and memorable characters make for one of the better Cthulhu lore games around.

If you can get past the weak combat, harmless jank, and enjoy a solid detective experience that won't hold your hand and throw tough choices your way, you shouldn't pass up on it. Even more so if you're a fan of Lovecraft. Because as the Old Ones were, the Old Ones are, and the Old Ones shall be and that's a good enough reason for me!
