Sony Xperia 1 Dual-SIM grau

The Sony Xperia 1 offers a triple camera setup, plus a 21:9 4K HDR screen designed to be ideal for movie quality video recording and editing. Does the smartphone offer what's needed to keep up with Samsung and Huawei? The Xperia 1 gives a good try, but with an 8mp selfie camera, it falls behind the competition, and the lack of a dedicated night mode means the competition has the edge.

The new Xperia 1 is a powerful, ambitious smartphone that draws on Sony’s expertise with different kinds of hardware. That might sound like a winning formula, but the reality of living with a super tall, super high-res device falls well short of ideal. Yes, watching movies on the Xperia 1 is fantastic (assuming your content fills the screen correctly). And the triple camera system, while finicky, will produce some impressive photos. Unfortunately, the phone’s battery life is middling at best, and the benefits of a 4K screen in a device this small can be hard to pick out unless you’re really paying attention. Ultimately, the Xperia 1 has some very specific charms, but most people should probably look elsewhere for a more complete package.

The Xperia 1 is more than just Sony's latest flagship phone. It is the catalyst in the company's transformative turn in a new direction – one that would hopefully bring the Xperia brand back on the radar. It is the first Sony phone with a triple camera and the only handset on the market with a 4K OLED HDR display. The 21:9 aspect ratio makes it ideal for multitasking and watching movies, while camera features like eye-tracking autofocus and Cinema Pro video recording with full manual controls should have creators intrigued. But at a price of nearly $1000, does the Xperia 1 stand a chance against the high-end Android competition? I've been using it for about two weeks now, so here are my thoughts on the matter.

he Xperia 1 looks wacky at first with its very tall 21:9 aspect ratio, but aping the dimensions of a cinema screen means many Netflix films looks absolutely stunning with no letterboxing or cut-off. The tallness is also handy in portrait though, letting you split screen apps – you can watch a video in the top third while using, say, maps or messaging in the bottom two thirds with enough screen space for neither to be cramped. With an industry-first notchless 4K HDR OLED display and much-improved cameras, Sony has made a phone that isn’t for the mainstream but ties together the best the company has to offer in smartphone displays, video capture and video playback.
