Rage 2 (PC)

So much of this promising collaboration between id and Avalanche is unremarkable - but it's salvaged by bloody, brilliant combat.

For 1440p, we had to drop down to medium or low to get good frame rates. However, the difference from High to Low was shocking. 31 FPS leaps up to 66 FPS, so again, giving legs to older hardware here. 4K was out of the question, but we did gain a whopping 13 FPS at 4K Low vs Ultra. That’s more than 50% increase in FPS.

Yes, RAGE 2 is a demanding PC title, but so long as you have a relatively modern graphics card with 3GB or more VRAM, you should be able to run this game without any issues, especially if you are willing to play the game with dynamic resolution scaling enabled.

Modern open-world games need more than just 'here’s a bunch of stuff to do, go do it' checklist-design to stand out, and all the guns in the world can’t stop Rage 2 from feeling a little bit dated. Nonetheless, if you like a good FPS and don’t care that much about the package that comes wrapped around it, you’ll probably get something out of Rage 2.

Rage 2 is enjoyable as long as I make the effort to do very simple things in the silliest ways possible, and game’s many systems reward this style of play more by their quality than by any extrinsic payoff. There is creativity and joy hidden here. You just have to find it beneath the pile of ideas pulled from a thousand other games.

Overall, RAGE 2 is a solid first-person shooter with RPG elements that tries to include many concepts from other titles, but ends up being unremarkable in many ways. Still, if you are a fan of open world shooters or love post-apocalyptic titles, it's definitely worth checking out.
