Onimusha: Way of the Sword (Switch 2)

Onimusha: Way of the Sword is effectively a 30fps game on Switch 2, which naturally lowers the appeal of this action game compared to other platforms, but if you can adapt then it's still a great game. The underlying visuals are another showcase for what the Switch 2 is capable of, and its katana-fuelled action surviving the transition to handheld in remarkably good form.

Onimusha: Way of the Sword is a brilliant return to a classic that will remind skeptics that hardcore action can have its own face and not copy the Soulslike formula. When the game finally overcomes its overly drawn-out introduction, it transforms into an uncompromising, brutal and incredibly stylish samurai action game in which you savor literally every battle, even the most mundane

Capcom's dormant series returns with best-in-class combat.

Though some of the connective tissue that binds Onimusha: Way of the Sword together is a bit weak, though some of the pacing and padding is a bit thin, Capcom has once again shown us it is a master of its craft here.

After two decades, Onimusha Way of the Sword is a turning point for the franchise. It’s a genuinely engaging and engrossing story that sets up for a sequel I’m already itching to play, but is unfortunately held back by a cloud of annoying — and avoidable — pitfalls.
