techpowerup.com: G.SKILL Trident Z5 NeoX RGB 6000 CL30 32 GB Review (translate)
Now that we have benchmarked this memory, it is time to put everything into perspective. We will go over which platform this memory kit is best suited for, what G.SKILL could improve upon to make a better product, and finish up on a positive note. First off, let's cover system compatibility. Since DDR5's debut in 2021, we have seen four generations of Intel processors and two from AMD. DDR5 6000 MT/s (DDR5-6000) memory has remained the reliable sweet spot for both platforms, and this holds true for the G.SKILL Trident Z5 NeoX 6000 being reviewed here as well. Using Single-Rank DIMMs, this kit completely sidesteps the compatibility headaches that can come with Dual-Rank modules, making it an easier fit across a wider range of motherboards. G.SKILL has also included a secondary, non-ULL EXPO 6000 MT/s profile, giving buyers a safety net if their board or CPU sample doesn't play nice with the more aggressive ULL timings, a smart inclusion that removes a lot of the buyers' remorse risk that comes with binned, low-latency kits. The G.SKILL Trident Z5 ULL series is unmistakably designed with AMD in mind. This memory kit ships with AMD's EXPO ULL profile as its headline feature, and unfortunately, Intel does not yet support EXPO ULL profiles, though how much it would benefit remains to be determined. In either case, if AMD or Intel motherboards do not have support for EXPO ULL, it will still work if just EXPO is supported. The internal flags for enabling ULL are not conflicting with previous set values, meaning it will just be seen as regular EXPO memory. You will lose the tREFi timing, but the rest will still be intact. On AMD Ryzen 7000/9000 series systems, this kit stands out as a compelling choice. Our testing with games like Counter-Strike 2, Baldur's Gate 3, and Spider-Man Remastered consistently showed the Trident Z5 NeoX 6000 outperforming our CL28 DDR5-6000 memory and even surpassing the 8000 MT/s kit. This demonstrates that on AMD's Infinity Fabric-bound architecture, CL30 6000 MT/s is more crucial than raw frequency once you exceed the 6000-6400 MT/s sweet spot. At 4K resolution, the RTX 4090 became the bottleneck, eliminating almost all differences between memory kits. This serves as a reminder that the EXPO ULL advantage is most significant in CPU-bound, 1080p/1440p competitive scenarios rather than in GPU-limited 4K gaming. It's also important to note that there will be negligible performance gains for X3D Ryzen CPUs, as the expanded cache handles most of the workload. Some might argue that even a 1% improvement is meaningful, but the question remains: is it worth the cost to increase the 1% lows by a single percent over a more affordable option? X3D Ryzen owners need not apply. It's also worth pointing out to those memory overclockers that these DRAM ICs are not always guaranteed to be identical between production runs. Lower bins can and do change over a product's lifecycle. They only have to pass the binned profile advertised. With the massive supply shortage of ICs, expect a mixture of SK hynix 16 Gbit A-Die, M-Die and Samsung ICs. Unless it is the CL26 kit, getting A-Die is a mixed bag at this point in time. Therefore, the exact additional overclocking settings seen in this review aren't a hard guarantee for every unit sold. When it comes to maximizing performance with this kit's ULL profile, it's crucial to ensure you're running the latest AGESA 1.3.0.1b BIOS or newer. This is important because the EXPO 1.2 profile isn't yet recognized, meaning it won't load all the additional timings. Additionally, the Refresh Management (RFM) BIOS option has moved out of its "beta" status and will automatically enable when ULL flagged memory is selected. It's advisable for buyers to visit their motherboard vendor's update page to confirm the BIOS is available, rather than assuming plug-and-play EXPO ULL support will work straight out of the box. Wrapping up this review, the G.SKILL Trident Z5 NeoX ULL 6000 MT/s memory kit is an easy recommendation for AMD Ryzen 7000/9000 users seeking a memory overclocking boost. It's a hassle-free, plug-and-play experience. You don't need extra knowledge about timings, nor do you risk voiding your warranty. There's no need to dive into the advanced BIOS settings to tweak DRAM voltages, CPU IMC, or DRAM configuration sub-menus. G.SKILL has covered all the bases. The ULL timings are decent from an overclocker's perspective. G.SKILL has also added a large PMIC thermal pad, a feature often overlooked. Cooler components tend to last longer. For those worried about overheating, G.SKILL has increased the thickness of the heat spreaders too. This contributes to achieving the best possible 1% low performance at the 6000 MT/s sweet spot. The kit is backed by Single-Rank compatibility, a sensible fallback profile, clean and uniform RGB, and a limited lifetime warranty. However, it's important to weigh the premium price against the actual performance gains. EXPO ULL is not a magical solution when the game is GPU-bound, and G.SKILL even advises lowering expectations. Those familiar with memory overclocking or willing to learn the quirks of DRAM can achieve similar or better timings. In real-world scenarios, ULL offers a 2-3% performance increase over a PC Enthusiast EXPO memory kit. That doesn't stop us from recommending it for the consumer who has extra expendable income and would rather play games than dig around in BIOS menus and spend time testing stability.
