Wie schlägt sich der kleine, unter 300 Euro teure AMD Ryzen 5 7600X3D gegen den Neuling Ryzen 7 9800X3D für 550 Euro? Diese Frage ist aktueller denn je, denn der 7800X3D wird immer teurer und dürfte nicht mehr lange verfügbar sein. Es bleiben zum „X3D-Einstieg“ auf Sockel AM5 nur 9800X3D und 7600X3D. Beide CPUs im Vergleich.

Die perfekte Gaming-CPU? Der AMD Ryzen 7 7800X3D bietet 8 Kerne und 16 Threads und hinkt damit den Topmodellen in puncto Kernanzahl hinterher. Doch im Test zeigt der 8-Kerner, dass dieser nicht zu unterschätzen ist. In unserem Review ordnen wir seine Leistung im Vergleich zur Konkurrenz aus eigenem Hause und von Intel genauer ein.

Mit dem Ryzen 9 7950X3D und Ryzen 9 7900X haben wir uns die beiden vermeintlich stärksten X3D-Modelle bereits angeschaut. Auch den Ryzen 7 7800X3D konnte uns AMD nicht zum Start zur Verfügung stellen und somit kommen wir erst heute dazu einen Test nachzureichen. Mit seinen acht Kernen, die allesamt über den zusätzlichen Cache verfügen, umschifft er einige vermeintliche Klippen der anderen beiden Modelle und konzentriert sich vollständig auf den Spieler. Als kleinstes und günstigstes Modell ist die Zielgruppe klar gewählt. Ob der Ryzen 7 7800X3D auch die klarste Empfehlung für Spiele ist, sollen die folgenden Seiten klären.

Man nehme einen Ryzen 7 7700X, montiere etwas 3D-V-Cache huckepack und halbiere die Leistungsaufnahme des Intel Core i9-13900K. Fertig ist der halbe Ryzen 9 7950X, der nun als Ryzen 7 7800X3D ohne den zweiten Die zum Kunden kommt und im Gaming trotzdem meist genauso schnell agieren kann. Es ist zwar nicht die Quadratur des Kreises, aber fast. Solange man Anwendungen, also Spiele nutzt, die den Cache auch Futter-technisch voll verwerten können. Abseits davon wird es etwas enger, aber das interessierten den Gamer wohl eher weniger.

Es ist so weit: Mit dem Ryzen 7 7800X3D ist jetzt auch der von vielen Spielern am meisten herbeigesehnte X3D-Prozessor mit Zen 4 für Sockel AM5 erschienen. Der Test mit Spielen und Anwendungen zeigt: Der neue Ryzen 7 mit X3D-Cache ist noch mehr eine reine Spiele-CPU, als der Ryzen 7 5800X3D es war.

Take a Ryzen 7 7700X, piggyback some 3D V-cache and halve the power consumption of the Intel Core i9-13900K. The half Ryzen 9 7950X is ready, which now comes to the customer as Ryzen 7 7800X3D without the second die and can still usually act just as fast in gaming. It’s not squaring the circle, but it’s close. As long as you use applications, i.e. games, that can also fully utilize the cache in terms of feed. Away from that, it gets a bit tighter, but gamers were probably less interested in that.

After taking a detailed look at the Ryzen 9 7950X3D a couple of weeks ago, and considering the updated Ryzen 7 5800X3D performance data we had in-hand, we had a few assumptions about the Ryzen 7 7800X3D before it could even get installed into our test rig. Some of our assumptions were correct, while others were a little off, but ultimately, our overall guess is true: the 7800X3D is a fantastic gaming processor. The performance across these pages prove it again and again.

We wouldn't go so far as to call it perfect without any significant overclocking capability, but there is no doubt the Ryzen 7 7800X3D is a kick ass processor for gamers. Its low power consumption and class-leading game performance make it an ideal choice for anyone considering a new PC gaming rig.

As I conclude, I am happy to have had my hands on the much-anticipated 7800X3D finally. Equally important, there has been a recent drop in motherboard prices, and the B650 is now compatible with X3D after a BIOS upgrade, and DDDR5 prices are decreasing rapidly. The question arises whether one should opt for the 7800X3D or the reliable and tested 7950X3D. The answer is simple: if you are interested in content creation, have other heavy workloads, or future-proofing your system, then the 7900X3D/7950X3D is undoubtedly an exceptional choice. On the other hand, if you primarily intend to use your system for gaming and do not have stringent workload demands, then the 7800X3D could be the processor you need at a more reasonable price level. Overall, the 7800X3D's exceptional energy efficiency and game performance make it an intriguing option for gamers. However, if you require a bit more multi-threaded performance for other workloads, it would be worthwhile to consider the 7900X3D and 7950X3D.

The initial 7950X3D and 7900X3D launch was exciting but there were a lot of people, myself included, that had the launch date for the Ryzen 7 7800X3D marked down. It’s not that the crazy high-end flagships aren’t exciting, but if gaming is your only focus it is not only a waste of money but sometimes it can even mean less performance for gaming. The Ryzen 7 7800X3D on the other hand is the successor to the 5800X3D which has been extremely popular for gamers whereas the two other CPUs with their higher core counts and their asymmetric chiplet design have more of a focus on content creation and raw processing power and the asymmetric chiplet design complicates things as well. So how did the 7800X3D end up performing? Well if you are a gamer and your focus is on gaming performance, its performance is impressive. Like with the other 3D V-Stacked Cache CPUs there are games where it doesn’t benefit but when it does it matches and sometimes beats the performance of the 7950X3D. The flip side of that though is because the 7800X3D has a lower boost clock speed and fewer cores than the 7950X3D and 7900X3D in clock speed dependent applications it runs near the bottom of the 7000 Series product stack. In most of those tests, it sits between the 7600X and the 7700. In other words, if you will need top-level performance in applications beyond gaming the higher-end 3D CPUs might be the better option, or even cheaper CPUs like the 7700X. So there is a big tradeoff in performance that you will have to consider. Beyond that, I was surprised that the Ryzen 7 7800X3D ended up running cooler than expected and its power draw in our power tests was an improvement as well. Most likely from its lower boost clock. Like the other 7000 Series Ryzen CPUs, its idle power usage was still higher than past generations and Intel’s offerings. Also if you are going in thinking that the boost clock can just be fixed with an overclock, you do have a few auto overclock options but full manual overclocking is locked down just like the 7950X3D, 7900X3D, and the 5800X3D. For pricing, the Ryzen 7 7800X3D has an MSRP of $449 which is exactly what the last generation 5800X3D was priced at and up until now has been the go-to gaming CPU. This is $250 less than the 7950X3D and $150 less than the 7900X3D. But when it comes to standard non-gaming performance it does run in between the $299 7600X and $329 7700 so the gaming performance premium is $120+ and given just how well it performs in those situations I would say the extra money is worth it. I would still love to see something in between the 7800X3D and the 7900X3D with the same single chiplet design but with the higher boost clock that the 7950X3D and 7900X3D have, but as it sits this is still a monster gaming CPU.
